Why subscribe to Atlantis?
Atlantis Publications substack is the online home of Greg King and Penny Wilson, authors and historians specializing in Imperial Russia and the Romanov Dynasty.
“Atlantis” is a weighted word for us. About twenty-five years ago – and perhaps a little more – we started a history publication called Atlantis Magazine: In The Courts of Memory. At the time, although Greg was already a published author, Penny was not, and we were working on finding the right project and publisher to launch our co-authorship. And in the meantime, we thought a magazine would be a fun thing to work on.
Little did we realize how quickly it would grow! An exercise in 1990’s self-publication, it was literally printed out a page at a time in Penny’s home office, on a professional printer about the size of a Volkswagen Beetle (a gift from a supportive friend) and bound in a local printshop by a dedicated amateur binder. From start to finish, it was an absolute labor of love, and we were sorry to have to set it aside when we signed our first book contract to publish The Fate of the Romanovs with John Wiley & Sons.
Now arriving at a time where we realize that most of our book ideas and pet research projects are never likely to see the light of day via traditional publishing houses, we’ve decided to return to what was (briefly) our roots: self-publishing. And fortunately for us, technology has grown by leaps and bounds and has reached a point where we can produce our self-published books completely efficiently via Amazon’s publishing platform.
Which brings us back to Atlantis. We have resurrected our magazine, and two issues are already available on Amazon by searching for “Atlantis Magazine.” We are aiming at it being a quarterly magazine, running between 120 and 150 pages, with occasional specials that might run longer. Atlantis will feature articles by each of us, but also, as in the past, we will publish articles by others, so please consider Atlantis for your work if you are a writer with an interest in Imperial Russia.
This substack will serve as Atlantis’s and King and Wilson’s hub, leading to our various social media platforms and keeping interested readers updated on our books and projects. Additionally, we will be posting a number of articles each month and will bring you historical news and photographs, interviews with authors and people connected to Imperial Russia, and monthly Zoom “hangouts” where we will get to meet each other and join together in a deep dive into Imperial Russian and House of Romanov history.
Please do join us here as a free subscriber – we’d love to have you aboard!
