The Romanovs on Film: A Cinematic History of the Russian Dynasty is available on Amazon worldwide!
The Romanovs on Film has been an absolute passion project for the both of us; in our separate ways, we are each a huge fan of the movies. Combining our interests in the Russian Dynasty, the history of film, and popcorn, we've powered through 360 films and television shows produced in many languages and countries. The idea was to include any movie or (later on) television show produced between 1910 and the summer of 2023 which includes a portrayal of any member of the Romanov Dynasty.
There were a few movies that we couldn't watch, as they've been lost in time - and a couple of teleplays that were one-and-done with no tape made - but for those we were able to spend some fun time researching online and in film and production company archives in several countries.
We were also able to interview actors appearing in a few of these movies, including Jan Niklas from Peter the Great (1986) and Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna, (also 1986), and Janet Suzman and Ania Marson from 1971's Nicholas and Alexandra, the mothership of many long-time fans of Nicholas and Alexandra movies.
Anyway: 360 movies and TV shows; 322 pages; 121 black-and-white and color photos and four appendices dedicated to alternative titles; translations of foreign titles; a listing of all films reign-by-reign for those seeking to view productions concerning a particular sovereign; and complete title and bibliographic information.
The cover and inside pen-and-ink art is by our friend, the wonderful and talented Jake Gariepy. Thanks, Jake!
Personally, I think it would make a great holiday gift for the movie buff in your life.
Available worldwide in English, exclusively on Amazon. (Unfortunately, I cannot link the book’s Amazon page to substack for some reason. If you have trouble finding the book on Amazon, just email us and we will send you a link via email.)
(Maybe we'll do the documentaries next!)
