Translator’s Note: Starting with this installment, I have decided to focus primarily on entries in which the Grand Duke makes reference to ether members of the Imperial Family, or to important contemporary events, or both. This seemed to me to be a judicious decision; I doubt few readers are terribly interested in how many artillery shells this or that regiment received. If, as translating and annotating, my eyes glazed over, I imagine that most readers would have a similar reaction. While Andrei Vladimirovich is extremely detailed on military issues, this is a specialist interest, and I thought that readers would be more interested in his thoughts on the Romanovs, Rasputin, the Revolution, and events in 1917.
